Dear Editor, Apropos Feroz Ahmad’s article, “Changing role of library professionals” (GK, Feb. 18). Hundreds of high-tech and techno savvy graduates and post-graduates from Post Graduate Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kashmir, are sitting idle and desperately longing for opportunities to put in practice all the novel ways of handling the most precious and powerful resource of the modern world, that is information. In 2003, the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kashmir started a two-year integrated programme in Library and Information Science (MLIS) with a revised curriculum quite compatible with the demands of the modern digital environment. The students are well trained to acquire, organize, and disseminate information with the help of Information and communication technologies. The use of modern library software and other associated communication technologies such as the Internet and the World Wide Web for serving the information needs of the users also forms the part of the training. Owing to the incredible revolution brought about by IT, there has been information explosion in every field and thus there is a dire need of IT professionals for properly managing this vital resource. These IT professionals can be appointed as Information scientists, information managers, database managers, knowledge workers and Internet instructors. Also government is not improving and enhancing the library infrastructure and library services in our educational institutions at both lower and higher levels. And that prevents our young IT professionals from contributing their hard earned skills for the betterment of the society.Javed Ahmad LoneTujar Sharief, Sopur
