About the Database
Within the framework of its activities for WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) and in order to contribute to the ongoing and long term presence of libraries in the world, IFLA has set up a database that aims to showcase the value of libraries to society as a whole.
The aims of the WSIS Declaration of Principles and Action Plan take into account the place of libraries in society today. However, in order to ensure that the actions described become a lasting reality they must become better known so that the funding agencies for the information society, whether they be government or private enterprise, will become more aware of libraries’ achievements and the services they provide in making knowledge and information available, and therefore be encouraged to fund future activities.
Contents
Library’s achievements and projects according to the categories below
Libraries as access point
Libraries as ICT learning centres
Libraires for continuing education
Libraries for specific needs
Libraries for cultural heritage
This database is not restricted to projects developed in one institution alone. On the contrary, the strength of libraries in the world today is to cooperate and network on all levels, local, regional, national and international. You’ll find such initiatives, especially those with partnerships between advanced and emerging economies.
