Wastewater ends up in urban agriculture: a global survey
A 53 city study conducted by IWMI has raised concerns over health impacts of wastewater use in urban agriculture. In over 70 percent of the cities studied, more than half of urban agricultural land was found to be irrigated with wastewater that is either raw or diluted in streams. The high prevalence of wastewater irrigation has been attributed to the increasing urban water demand and related return flow of treated and untreated water into the water bodies, urban food demand and lack of alternative water sources. Indian cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad and Bangalore have figured prominently in the study.
