Need for enhanced library services stressed


TIRUCHI: In the backdrop of radical changes in the form and content of libraries caused by technological advancement, the national workshop on ‘Quality Assurance in Academic Libraries: NAAC and NBA Parameters' organised by the Department of Library, National College, highlighted the role libraries can play by harnessing technology.

Delivering the key-note address, Shri. Jahagirdar, Librarian, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) focussed on the positive steps that could ensure access to library and learning resources at an affordable cost. Efficiency and quality in provision of library services for teaching, learning and research is the corner stone for the survival and success of libraries, he said, and explained the quality indicators of Library and Information System and the grading system of NAAC. S. Srinivasaraghavan, Librarian, Bharathidasan University, explained the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) parameters for engineering colleges while M. Durairajan, Librarian, St. Joseph's College, spoke on ‘Best Practices in Library and Information Sciences.'

Inaugurating the workshop, Dr.P.V. Konnur, University Librarian, Bangalore University, emphasised the need for enhancement of the quality of services to attract users and optimise the use of library resources. Presiding over, the Principal K. Anbarasu spoke of the dynamic transformation of libraries. Dr. Anbarasu handed over the first copy of the Manual on ‘NAAC and NBA Parameters on LIS' to Mr. Jahagirdar and Dr. Konnur. M. Krishnan, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, delivered the valedictory address. Vice-Principal A. Krishnamurthy presided. P. Raghavan, Librarian, National College; and R. Jayabal, Librarian, Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, also addressed the gathering of about 150 Library professionals, faculties and students of colleges and universities from various parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring States.
